Chapter 11

Arri was trying to relax, get some rest, but it was impossible. Kale had yet to show up, and it had been over three days. He was curled around his pup, the small male asleep nestled in the blanket against his chest. Vann was pacing, the big beta silent, and agitated. The emotions pouring from the male were giving Arri a headache, but he wasn’t going to say anything. It was beyond what Arri could fix, whatever Vann needed to do to deal with everything that was going on, all the things which had happened.

“Arri!”

Arri lurched to a sitting position as Dryden’s voice echoed through his mind. “Dryden!” Arri’s heart tripped, and then raced at hearing his mate.

“I’m coming. Hold on, my mate. Are you okay? Vann? The pup?”

Arri wanted to laugh out loud with joy, and relief, at Dryden’s overwhelming concern, at his battery of questions. “We’re okay for now. Kale hasn’t come in a few days, but except for hunger, we are well. The pup is born, your son is strong.” Arri couldn’t keep the apprehension from his voice, mixed with pride for giving his mate such a gift. Dryden would know what happened for the pup to be alive, though.

“Son? I have a son?”

The pride, and wonderment that traveled along their mating link helped calm Arri. He glanced up to see Vann staring at him, the beta with his hands in fists at his side. “Dryden is coming.” Vann nodded, then turned away, his shoulders slumping. Before Arri could say anything else, Vann turned back to him.

“Make sure he knows we’ve been hearing multiple footsteps above us.”

Arri nodded. For the last two days, the steps on the floor over their heads had increased. Neither had smelled the strong odor of other shifters, so they both concluded it was humans Kale had in the house. “Dryden, Vann says to tell you we are hearing lots of footsteps in the house above us. Kale has us locked in the basement. We can’t scent shifters, so it could be humans helping him.”

“Anrean hasn’t indicated his father’s pack has helped Kale, except in procuring items of torture.”

Arri could hear the anger, and disgust in Dryden’s voice, and he wondered who Anrean was. “Do you know where we are?”

“Yes, you are on the outskirts of the Crater pack…in Minnesota. Anrean’s father is the alpha, and has been providing Kale with the stuff he needs to keep you prisoner, injured, and weak. We should be there in less than two hours. Hang on, my mate. I’m coming for you. And, Arri, make sure Vann knows I understand he had to do what he did—for you, our pup, and me. ”

Arri’s entire body relaxed, knowing his big, strong mate was not angry at him, or Vann for what they had done to keep the pup alive. Vann had turned away again, was pacing on the other side of the room near the stairs. “He understands, Vann. He’s not angry.” Vann glanced up at Arri’s soft words, but his face was blank.
